Tsunami
On 26th December 2004, a massive Tsunami triggered by the second most powerful undersea earthquake worst ever in the history, measuring 9.3 Richter scale epicentred in the island of Sumatra of Indonesia had caused an extensive damage to the following twelve countries across Asia and Africa.

- Sri Lanka
- Maldives
- India
- Somalia
- Kenya
The worst affected countries among the above are Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and India. Tsunami, 7 hours that shook the world is not just a wave. It was a living, fighting and malevolent force and it was out to kill more than 2,20,000 people, millions homeless, loss of livelihoods and shattered dreams in a matter of minutes.

Tsunami in India:
The most devastated States by tsunami are Andaman and Nicobar islands, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. However, Orissa and West Bengal states had minor impact.
The tidal waves leaping upto 30 – 40 feet height crossed the beach and slammed in to the adjoining sea side and low laying areas causing extensive damage to the lives, shelter, properties, livestock, fishing nets and boats, agricultural lands, drinking water sources, communication facilities, etc.
Tsunami in Tamil Nadu:
Tamil Nadu, one of the States in India has got affected badly. About 7000 people have lost their lives and 1.5 lakh families living along the coastal stretch of 700 kms in 13 districts lost their houses and livelihoods. As the situation after tsunami was very grim it warranted immediate attention both from the governments and NGOs.
